In ‘Dub Chawala’, step backwards, sweep the opponent’s straight jab downwards, and finish up with a cross jab to his face. In ‘Khun Yak Jub Ling’, use your arms to shield the face, while continually stepping in and out to avoid strikes. The ‘Hak Kor Erawan’ can be used against a punch or a kick, countering with a devastating knee strike.
Seasoned Muay Thai fighter and 3-time bronze winner in the world championships, Kru Hemanth Kumar has also perfected Self-Defence techniques targeting vulnerable pressure points. He has spent three decades teaching and training in multiple styles of Muay Thai.
The Mae Mai close combat fighting strategy is neither simple nor basic. Every single technique involves skill to execute a system of movement that has been passed down by the ancient masters of Muay Thai.
A trick to remember the 15 techniques of Mae Mai is to focus on their alternative names, for example the twisting serpent’s tail or breaking the tusks of the elephant, and so on. This helps picture the movement, allowing one to easily recollect and execute the move during a fight.
The final three moves as part of Mae Mai are Dub Chawala, Khun Yak Jub Ling, and Hak Kor Erawan.
Often referred to as extinguishing the lamp technique, this involves countering the opponent’s straight jab by stepping backwards, sweeping the punch downwards to deflect it, and then finishing up with a cross jab to his face.
This is also called the giant lord catching the monkey technique. It basically involves defending yourself against multiple incoming attacks in quick succession, effectively blocking every single blow. The fighter uses his arms to block and shield the face, while continually stepping in and out to avoid the opponent’s strikes.
The final technique in Mae Mai is the Hak Kor Erawan or breaking the neck of the divine elephant. True to its name, this is a powerful move that can deal much damage to your opponent. It can be used in both the outer and the inner circle of attack – against a punch or a kick – countering with a devastating knee strike.
That covers the 15 techniques of the Mae Mai fighting strategy. In the past, mastering Mae Mai Muay Thai meant unlocking even more advanced techniques such as the Luk Mai or Mai Kred. These war combat moves would be shared with only the most trustworthy students. Check out the next set of posts on Luk Mai.
