The female 45 and male 45 blocks involve raising your lead or rear leg, making a 45-degree angle with respect to the opponent. Instead, if the incoming blows are in a straight line, the neutral block can be used to ward off the strike. Though simple, this defence relies on timing for efficacy.

In a fight, you may not always have the luxury of dodging or stepping away from attacks. Sometimes, you need to stand your ground and use your knee to block an incoming strike. These knee blocks in Muay Thai are particularly effective against kicks and knee strikes.

The female 45 or male 45 blocks involve raising your lead or rear leg, making a 45-degree angle with respect to the opponent. These blocks are particularly effective against any kind of circular attack.

It is always prudent to block with the knee and not the shin. This not only causes the least hurt to your leg, but may also end up causing the attacker some pain when his foot connects with your knee.

What do you do when the incoming blows are straight line attacks instead? The neutral block is quite useful to ward off such strikes. The movement though simple relies on timing for efficacy. A fighter gets but an instant to ready the knee before an attacker’s leg is headed his way. Being mindful and watchful of the opponent at all times is advisable.

All three blocks allow the fighter to set up a counterattack besides shielding him from incoming attacks. There’s also a clinch tactic which locks the opponent’s movement completely, besides closing the gap with him. Read the upcoming post to learn the Muay Thai Clinch.
