These techniques are a combination of stances, blocks, punches, kicks, strikes, and sweeps. For a green belt Karateka, there are 10 combinations to be mastered in a back stance. The techniques aim at building basic defense and counterattack capabilities in a Karateka through regular practice.

The previous blog was on the back kick and its variations. This one is on techniques for green belts. For a Karateka to learn the basics of the green belt, they need to be proficient with a set of techniques before they get to the next level. You should be familiar with the 5 kicks – front, side, back, turning and slap kick. You should also know the 4 sweeps – back leg sweep, front leg scissor sweep, scissor-move reverse sweep, and the circle sweep.

In this blog, we will learn the ten basic techniques necessary for a green belt Karateka. Let's look at the techniques done, starting from a back-stance position.

  1. Back leg sweep, leg forward to back stance, outer forearm block, forward stance, reverse punch, back stance, knife hand block
  2. Front leg scissor sweep, back stance, outer forearm block, forward stance, reverse punch, back stance, knife hand block
  3. Scissor-move front leg reverse sweep, back stance, inner forearm block, forward stance, reverse punch, back stance, knife hand block
  4. Circle sweep, back stance, inner forearm block, forward stance, reverse punch, back stance, knife hand block
  5. Back leg sweep, same leg side kick, back stance, inner forearm block, forward stance, reverse punch, back stance, knife hand block

All the above techniques are to be done in a forward moving position and in a backward moving position. The techniques aim at building basic defense and counterattack capabilities in a Karateka. With the green belt techniques you have read about in this blog, it's time to practice, practice, and practice until you get them right. Our next blog will be on Kata Heian Nidan. Keep reading.
