In the previous blog, we looked at the Kata Heian Yondan. Now we will go through the techniques for brown belts in Karate. For a Karateka to learn the basics of each belt, they need to be proficient with a set of techniques before they get to the next level. These techniques are a combination of stances, blocks, punches, kicks, strikes, sweeps, etc.

In this episode, we will learn the basic techniques necessary for a brown belt Karateka. All the techniques are done in a forward-stance position. It is of paramount importance to be comfortable with the different kicks in Karate before you try these techniques. Go through the previous blogs if you need a refresher in the kicks.

  1. Back leg (right) front kick, join the leg, turn around, left leg back kick, same leg jumping front kick, leg forward, down block, reverse punch
  2. Back leg turning kick, join the leg, turn around, other leg side kick, leg forward, same leg scissor jumping kick, leg forward, down block, reverse punch
  3. Back leg inner crescent kick, join the leg, turn around, other leg back kick forward, back leg front kick, same leg scissor jumping kick, down block, reverse punch
  4. Back leg inner crescent kick, join the leg, turn around, other leg side kick, leg forward, same leg scissor-move side kick, same leg scissor jumping kick, down block, reverse punch

  6. Back leg inner crescent kick, leg forward, same leg scissor-move hook kick, leg forward, back leg front kick, same leg jumping front kick, down block, reverse punch

All the techniques are to be done in a forward moving position and in a backward moving position. The techniques aim at building basic defense and counterattack capabilities in a Karateka. Beyond these techniques, it is useful to create your own techniques. Imagine there are multiple attacks, kicks and punches from different angles, and visualise how you will defend and respond with blocks and counter attacks. Keep practicing and don’t forget to check out our next blog on Kata Heian Godan.
