The previous blog was on techniques for yellow belts. Now we’ll learn your second Kata, the Taikyoku Sandan. It is the third of the Katas of the Taikyoku series and is a basic learner's Kata involving moves, blocks and punches.
In terms of movement, this Kata is very similar to the Taikyoku Shodan, tracing the pattern of the alphabet ‘I’. The difference is with respect to the stance and block. While you used a forward stance and down block there, here you will be using a back stance with the inner forearm block.
In this Kata, the Karateka uses the following:
Start with a bow, look to the direction where you’re going, switch to a back stance with an inner forearm block. Then move forward and punch. Look back, cover your body with the hand, perform a back turn, keeping your feet in a straight line, and finish with an inner forearm block. Move forward and punch.
The remaining moves are quite similar to the Taikyoku Shodan which you’ve read about earlier. Look towards the left, lift your elbow for the down block, draw a semicircle with your left leg for a left half turn, and finish with a down block. Look straight and move forward along the line with three punches, one after the other, ending with the ‘Kiai’ sound on the third punch!
Now execute a 3/4 turn using your back leg with a down block to face the right in a back stance, and complete the move with a move forward and punch. Look back, lift up your arm, keep your leg back for a back turn, finish in a forward stance, move forward and punch.
Look towards the left, lift your elbow for the down block, draw a semicircle with your left leg for a left half turn, and finish with a down block. Look straight and move forward along the line with three punches, one after the other, ending with the ‘Kiai’ sound!
Repeat one last set of movements along the base of the ‘I’, and finish the Kata with a bow. With the stances, blocks and punches you have learnt in this blog, it's time to practice, practice, and practice until you get them right. Our next blog will be on Chops and Open Hand Strikes.
