The last blog was on Kata Kanku Dai. Now we will look at the third Kata in the Tekki series – Kata Tekki Sandan. This is a relatively shorter but advanced learner’s Kata featuring complex and swift hand movements. The Karateka uses the following moves:

In this Kata, the Karateka uses the following movements:

  • Horse stance
  • Sweeps
  • Back fist attacks
  • Side, outer forearm, inner forearm and down blocks
  • Elbow strikes and breaks
  • Grabs, pulls and hand releases

Let’s look at how to execute the Kata. From the starting position, move your left leg across your right leg, such that both the little toes are touching each other. Cross your hands and bring them close to your chest. Your left hand should be in a fist and the right hand open palm, with the right hand above the left.

Bend your knees and move sideways (to your right) for a quick inner forearm block, followed by a down block. Next is a sequence of ten counts that you need to understand carefully as it gets repeated further along. Also, these movements need to be done in quick succession, so you need to practice them well. We start with an elbow break, open your arms, follow with a back fist strike, pull back, punch, short outer forearm block, and then straighten your arm. Next, move sideways, open hand and inner forearm block. Draw a big circle using your right hand, pull back and punch.

Now breathe on the other side (left), straighten your arm, turn your head, cross your feet (with little toes touching), move sideways, pull back your hand and block. Repeat the ten counts that you read earlier on this side.

Breathe on the right, straighten your arm, turn your head, move sideways with a short inner forearm block, pull back and end with a back fist. Come up and end the Kata. As you’d have noted by now, learning the 10 count is learning almost 90% of the movements of this Kata as it gets repeated on both sides.

So keep training, practice regularly and you’re sure to pick up the movements in no time. Continuing with our learning of Katas, the next blog will feature Kata Jion. Keep reading and honing your Karate skills.
