In this third Kata of the Heian series, the Karateka uses the following sequence of movements: Back stance movements, inner forearm blocks + hand grab and release; Horse stance movements with hammer fists; Elbow blocks and back fist combination movements; Backward punches.

In the last blog, we looked at techniques for blue belts. Now we’ll move on to Kata Heian Sandan. This Kata is the third of the Heian series' Katas. It involves fist movements, back stance movements, taps, thrusts and more.
In this Kata, the Karateka uses the following:
Turn your head to the left, switch to a back stance with an inner forearm block. Join your right leg, turn towards the left, maintaining the left hand in the inner forearm block position. Bring your right hand over the left, pull back, perform a short down block with the left hand, and an inner forearm block with the right hand. Repeat the two blocks by interchanging the hands. Then do a back turn with an inner forearm block to face the right, and repeat the sequence of movements.
Next, look towards the straight line, keep your fists together and switch to a back stance with a double hand inner forearm block. Join your legs, tap with the left hand and thrust forward with the right. Now perform a back turn, open both your hands, shift your weight to the other leg, perform an outer forearm block with the left hand, and bring the right hand down to block any stick attacks to the leg. Switch to a horse stance with hammer fist, move forward and “Kiai”!
Join your legs, pull up your body while breathing in, breathing out. Perform an inner crescent kick, landing in a horse stance, elbow strike and then a back fist. The elbow strike can be thought of as a block, whereas the back fist can be an attack to the face. Repeat the crescent kick, elbow and back fist sequence twice, maintaining the horse stance throughout. Next is slow breathing, followed by a move forward punch with the left hand and “Kiai”.
Next is a 3/4 turn, land in a horse stance, elbow back with the left hand and a punch with the right hand close to your face. Lift the right leg and jump to the right while dragging the left leg, finish with the elbow back and face punch.
That ends the Kata. The movements from this Kata onwards begin to become complex and require a lot of practice. Ensure you read thoroughly and practice until you get them right. In the next blog, we will look at the Techniques for Purple Belts.
