Three players with one ball keep passing to each other while running forward to a point and then come back. In terms of form, it is advisable to be in a slightly bent position, allowing you to glimpse the pitch ahead while running with the ball. This can be a full-fledged 3v1 training drill by adding a defender into the mix.

If you’ve read up on passing going forward in twos, it should be easy enough to picture passing going forward in threes. While this involves even more coordination among the players, it can be a useful skill to master in order to get closer to scoring a goal in field hockey. Basically, three players with one ball keep passing to each other while running forward to a point and then come back. This hockey skills training is easy enough to describe but practising it is where attention to detail is really required.
The player on the left passes the ball to the one in the centre, who in turn passes to the player on the right. The player on the right runs a few steps forward and passes the ball back to the centre and then on to the left. This repeats in a loop until they reach a predetermined point on the field and then return to their starting point. The players need to take care to ensure every pass is angled to the front of the player to whom they’re passing. It is important that the player on the left learns to do the pass with the reverse of the stick, whereas the one on the right should learn to curve the blade while passing the ball back.
A bit more on the game mechanics – maintain a 2 metre distance between the players which can be increased as they get more comfortable with passing the ball. Interchange positions after each round. Players to be in a slightly bent position while running forward with the ball, allowing them to see the pitch ahead from the top of their eyes. The ball should be tapped forward continually while running to make sure it stays right in front and doesn’t waver to the left or right.
By adding a defender, you could turn this into a full-fledged 3 vs. 1 hockey training drill. The aim of course would be to try and eliminate the defender by having the attackers pass the ball between themselves. That covers passing going forward in twos and threes. What remains is how to do it in fours which is slightly trickier. Continue reading to learn how it’s done while playing field hockey.
