Two players are positioned on opposite sides, about midway of the path the players are taking while running with the ball. The runner modifies his run slightly, wherein he passes to either of the players on the side and collects the ball back smoothly and seamlessly while staying in motion, before proceeding to the other end.

Running with the ball and executing a wall pass is an effective strategy in football to set up goal-scoring opportunities and openings. The only way to master this technique is to of course practise it in the field. For this, the players are divided into two groups standing at two ends of the field.

Running with the Ball

A player runs with the ball (controlling the ball and keeping it constantly in front with light touches) and when he reaches the other end, the leading member of that group takes the ball effortlessly from him, accelerates and continues back down the line. This sudden burst of speed as soon as you take over ball control mimics and prepares you for the game situation where you have to beat the defender after getting the ball.

Repeat this until all the players in each group have got the opportunity to run with the ball at least once. The few things to keep in mind are proper/close touches, good movement/forward running, and holding your head high so you see the track ahead and are aware of your surroundings.

Wall Pass

Next, we move on to wall passes. Picture this, two players are positioned on opposite sides, about midway of the path the players are taking while running with the ball. Pay attention to the technique, how you need to execute the wall pass for it to be most effective. The runner modifies his run slightly, wherein he passes to either of the players on the side and collects the ball back smoothly and seamlessly while staying in motion, before proceeding to the other end.

Group Practice

The final part of this post focuses on a game situation, with the objective of getting you to score goals. The opposing teams will try to run with the ball and shoot at goal. The important thing is to stay on your toes, be alert and make use of running with the ball and the wall passes you have just learnt to create scoring opportunities for your team.

The wall pass requires quick reflexes and split-second decision making on-field. This will come with practice as you advance in your journey to master the sport of football. The next post in this blog series deals with defending play and its fundamentals. A strong defence can as much win a game as a good offence.
