Maintain an optimal distance from the ball, else you won’t be able to generate sufficient power as you run and kick. Stay slightly across/diagonal to the ball. Focus on the ball, then watch the target, switch back to focus on the ball, then run and shoot. Adjust force and trajectory to ensure the ball goes over the defensive wall and into the goal.

In the previous post we looked at set plays for attacking with respect to corner kicks and throw-ins. Now we proceed to describe the approach for free kicks and penalty kicks. Free kicks and penalty kicks are thrilling but come with a lot of pressure as the outcome of a game often hinges on these. You may be interested to know that penalties have even decided World Cups; that’s how crucial it is to hone this skill as an attacker.
We begin with free kick practice; imagine you’ve got it from the top of the box. A couple of pointers here so you can land an effective kick. It’s very important to concentrate when you’re taking a free kick. Maintain an optimal distance from the ball, else you won’t be able to generate sufficient power as you run and kick. Stay slightly across/diagonal to the ball, instead of in a straight line. If you stand in a straight line to the ball, you will be able to cover only one angle.
Now focus on the ball, then watch the target, switch back to focus on the ball, then run and shoot. This sequence is simple but important to remember. Concentration and technique are equally important for a successful shot at goal. Keep in mind that there would be a defensive wall of players between you and the goal, so try to shoot above that.
Next, we introduce defenders into this exercise, with the defensive wall in place. The attacker taking the shot has to adjust the force and trajectory to ensure the ball goes over them and into the goal. The trick is to swing the ball when you kick it. This won’t come easy, but with practise you should be able to ace it. Sometimes, you might spot an opportunity when the defenders in the wall jump, creating space below their feet. In such a situation, you could also choose to play the ball close to the ground and shoot at goal.
The second part of this tutorial guide is on set plays for penalty kicks. You need to take care of the same pointers discussed for free kicks – keeping your body position across/diagonal, maintaining optimal distance from the ball, having full concentration.
Both these kicks require a lot of practice to perfect your technique. In a match situation there will be added pressure, so you need to be able to concentrate in the midst of all that. In the next post, we move on to development of speed and acceleration in football, focusing on warmup exercises as well as drills to be more quick and agile on your feet. Keeping reading and continue this journey to master football.
