For the Classic Two Note groove, play a single stroke on the hi-hat and kick drum together on count 1, and the hi-hat and snare drum on count 2. Repeat for 3 and 4. For the Waltz beat, play a single stroke on the hi-hat and kick drum together on count 1. On 2 and 3, play the hi-hat and the snare drum.

This blog will teach you how to count and play quarter note grooves. You also get to learn two famous beats – the Classic Two Note groove and the Waltz groove used across different musical genres. Let’s dig in!

What is a Groove?

Every one of us has that one song that we love and have fun bobbing our head to. Do you know what a groove really means? In simple terms, groove is another term for a “beat” and can be played at any given time signature.

Quick question – has anyone told you that playing the drums is like staying in tune with your heart beat? Yes, if you carefully observe your breathing and feel your heartbeat, playing the drums comes naturally.

Playing the Quarter Note Groove

First, let’s start with understanding what a quarter note groove is. In one of the previous lessons, we learnt to count a quarter note, which is 1-2-3-4. Now that we know how to count a note groove, let’s learn how to play the Classic Two Note beat and the Waltz beat.

Classic Two Note Groove

To start with, play a single stroke on the hi-hat with your right hand and the kick drum with your right foot together on count 1. Make sure that when you play the hi-hat and the bass drum, the timing is perfect. Playing the kick drum slightly later than the hi-hat would sound sloppy and not clean.

Once you have perfected playing them together without any delay, play the hi-hat and the snare drum together on count 2. For counts 3 and 4, repeat the same pattern. This time signature is a 2/4 groove as it has two notes in a bar.

Although it might seem simple, request you not to rush. Take your time, be patient and practise till you get it right.

Waltz Groove

The next groove we are about to learn is the Waltz beat. Unlike the last quarter note groove, which was played in 2/4-time signature, this groove has three notes in a bar.

For the Waltz beat, play a single stroke on the hi-hat and the kick drum together on count 1 (same as Classic Two Note Beat). On counts 2 and 3, play the hi-hat and the snare drum together without the kick drum.

If it is too fast, you know what to do – slow it down until you get comfortable playing fast. On every two notes for each of these quarter note grooves, remember to breathe in and have a relaxed exhalation.

After learning the quarter note grooves, we move on to eighth note grooves in the upcoming blog post. Keep reading and learning.
