Increase the number of your single strokes on the left and right hand as you move towards a pyramid structure. Reach to about 8 single strokes on each hand, reduce one single stroke on the right and the left hand and relax your hands for the best warmup.

It goes without saying that warming up is an integral part of performing at the highest level. Be it any sport or any musical instrument for that matter. This blog talks about the Pyramid Warmup and how it helps your hands loosen up for better and stronger technique.
It is quite evident that if we do not follow the right warmup structure, even with physical exercise, things can go wrong. By practising the wrong technique, you can also harm yourself. Coming back to the lesson, the Pyramid Warmup structure involves playing eight single strokes on the left hand followed by eight single strokes on the right hand.
As it is a Pyramid Warmup, as the next sequence, we play seven single strokes on the left hand and seven single strokes on the right hand. Therefore, by reducing one single stroke on the left and the right hand, we complete the Pyramid Warmup routine. Below you see the inverted Pyramid Warmup structure:
The Pyramid Warmup routine can be tried at various speeds/tempo. However, to get strong at any technique, it is important to take it slow and be patient. Try this – relax your shoulders, sit up straight and with every single stroke – inhale and exhale at a comfortable pace.
The secret to getting better at drums is counting. No one wants to listen to a drummer who sounds sloppy and off time. The best way to practise is to count as you play the single stroke on your left and then using your right hand. If that seems too much, get a metronome (device that gives rhythmic beats) application installed on your phone. You can adjust the speed you are comfortable with, play to the beat and slowly increase the tempo.
It’s important to get these basics or the foundation right before you move on to learning advanced techniques and how to play music. In the next post, we look at the correct body position with respect to the drum kit.
