Based on the pace of the delivery, position yourself a little beside the off stump to have the clear view of the ball. According to how you feel the ball in your gloves, perfect your position. With a balanced posture, shift your weight on both your legs equally and gradually crouch as the ball is released.
One of the most talented cricketers from South Africa, your coach has been involved in some of the greatest knocks in the history of international cricket – six sixes in an over in ODI, and 175 from 111 balls among others. He is one of only ten batsmen in ODI history to score three consecutive hundreds.
It’s time we move from batting and bowling techniques to become great behind the wickets. From learning in-swingers and out-swingers in the previous blog post, today’s blog focuses on wicket keeping techniques. It’s time to have some fun.
As a cricketer, it is important to realise your potential and choose a path. Do you want to become a batter, bowler or a wicket keeper? Based on your competency and passion, make the wise choice as it can pave your future as a cricketer.
In today’s blog, it’s all about wicket keeping. Before anything else, as a wicket keeper, consider how you would position yourself. The idea is to approximately position yourself behind the wickets a little further from the batter. Ensure that you stand a little wider than the off stump so you can judge the direction of the ball. Next, observe how you catch the ball using your glove. If the ball drops short, move a bit forward. If you feel the ball hitting your glove hard, move back a few steps.
As for the wicket keeper’s kit, we have a pair of pads, however, without the flaps. These kind of pads helps the wicket keeper run with ease and stay comfortable in a crouching position. Next comes the gloves and finally the helmet.
For the best technique, stay in a crouched position until the bowler releases the ball. Once the ball is released, try to adjust your position based on the height at which the ball arrives. The most important part is to learn how to catch the ball using wicket keeping gloves. Always use soft hands. Meaning, when the ball arrives, instead of trying to just grab the ball, let the ball give in to the gloves.
Keeping wickets to a spin bowler can be tricky. With spinners coming up with new variations, it can become difficult to judge your stance and the direction of the ball. The best position would be to position yourself outside the off stump. On the other hand, it is always a good idea to mark your standing position. Plant your left foot between the middle stump and the off stump and the right foot 2-3 feet away from the off stump.
Try to mark your position on the leg side as well. Practise hard as a wicket keeper to hone your craft. As for the next blog post, we master the off cutter!
